Tits, Breasts, Boobs, Ass…Ovaries?
So I have talked a lot about breasts. Too much probably but talking about boobs is a lot more socially accepted then, say, your ovaries. In my opinion, we should be able to say the word “ovary” and not have someone make a guaking face. I find it amusing that I can say tit, breast, boob, or even ass and no one cares…but say ovaries and its a whole other ball game.
As you now from my earlier posts, ovarian cancer is what devastated my family by taking my own mothers life at 39. I myself have a 44% risk for ovarian cancer and to date, the deaths associated with ovarian cancer are just too high. Ovarian cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in women (2nd to pancreatic cancer) and this is a shocker to many as most assume it is breast cancer. Breast cancer might affect more women but it does not take as many lives. Breast cancer can typically be found pretty early but for ovarian cancer, once detected, it is usually so far developed that most individuals will succumb to the disease. Hopefully in my lifetime I will see better detections for ovarian cancer arise…
Ovaries are sexy too!
This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the OCNA (Ovarian Cancer National Alliance) conference in Washington, DC. I was there as a representative of FORCE in the exhibit hall and had the indeed pleasure of speaking with many ovarian cancer survivors, previvors, activists, and those who have been touched by this awful disease. Prior to the exhibit hall actually opening I had a very candid conversation with several women at the booth next to mine from the NOCC (National Ovarian Cancer Coalition). We were talking about how “sexy” pink has become and how breasts and “breast cancer” are so much in the lime light. My question was and still is, “why can’t ovaries be sexy too?” Seriously, all women are born with ovaries. You can’t have children with out them. They are pretty important internal functions and teal is just a beautiful color in my opinion…so why can’t ovaries be beautiful and sexy like breasts and be in the public eye like breast cancer?
I literally came home and said to my husband, someone should have a fashion show fundraiser and have women in bikini bathing suits wearing pink tops and teal bottoms during HBOC week. (Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Week). Or maybe you could have a somewhat risqué youtube public service announcement that have a half naked woman covering her breasts with one arm saying “I care about these two guys but what I really need to worry about is the two behind here” and have her pointing to her teal underwear. I mean, sex sells right? That would create some real awareness!
